There’s lots of talk about how painful rejection is. Always the dramatic comparisons to having your heart torn out— unexpectedly, painfully, and all at once. Rarely is the subtler agony of falling out of love with a person brought up. Maybe it’s because the process is so much slower— almost unnoticeable. The once-cute quirks become annoyances. Phone calls shorten a minute each time, until you find yourself searching for enough to say. Dates grow routine and eventually into a hassle. And one day, their smile doesn’t provoke yours anymore. You realize with a pang that they’ve become entirely ordinary.
